Helder and Jose Costa grew up in the quiet town of Lagoas, Cantanhede, Portugal — a place where life was simple, resources were few, and family meant everything. In their modest home, the comforting scent of freshly baked bread often filled the air. It wasn’t fancy — just honest, homemade food that brought people together.
In 1974, chasing the promise of new opportunity, the Costa family made the bold move to Canada. Like many immigrants, they arrived with little more than determination, grit, and a dream for something more.
Caldense Bakery was originally founded in 1968, serving Portuguese breads and pastries to a growing community. But in 1994, the story took a new turn. Helder Costa, driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and a deep love for his culture’s cuisine, took over the bakery with two partners. It wasn’t an easy path — far from it. In fact, before stepping into the bakery business, Helder juggled two other jobs just to keep his dream alive. Those long hours and late nights weren’t just about survival — they were about building something that mattered.
Soon after, his brother Jose joined him, and together they poured their hearts into the business. When they became sole owners, the vision was clear: honor their roots, bring authentic Portuguese flavors to the community, and create a future for their families through something they truly believed in.
With a focus on traditional recipes, handcrafted quality, and a lot of love, the brothers transformed Caldense into more than just a bakery — it became a neighborhood staple. From artisan breads to celebration cakes to their famous Portuguese custard tarts (yes, the ones with the impossibly crisp crust and creamy filling), the bakery quickly earned a devoted following.
Today, Caldense Bakery has grown to 11 locations across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Bradford, and Whitby. But despite the expansion, it remains a family affair — 7 of the 11 locations are still proudly run by Helder, Jose, and their families, who carry on the traditions and values that started it all.
So whether you’re picking up a fresh loaf, grabbing your favorite pastry, or simply craving a taste of home — you’re always welcome here.
